Craft Guide — Why Balance Matters More Than Thickness
When choosing a leather watch strap, it's easy to assume that thicker means better.
A thicker strap feels more substantial in the hand. It often creates a stronger visual presence on the wrist. For certain watches, that's exactly the look collectors are after.
But at Atelier Tamago, we've always approached strap construction from a different perspective.
Rather than asking, "How thick should a strap be?" we ask a different question:
"What thickness allows the strap to perform at its best?"
For us, the answer has always been the same: one that achieves the right balance between comfort, durability, and proportion.
Comfort Is the First Luxury

A watch may only occupy a small part of your wrist, but you feel its strap all day long.
Comfort isn't determined by leather alone. It is shaped by every design decision, including thickness.
Our standard straps measure approximately 2.0 mm, while our signature light padding creates a finished profile of around 3.5 mm.
This slimmer construction allows the leather to wrap naturally around the wrist from the very first wear. It flexes more easily, feels lighter throughout the day, and gradually adapts to the shape of its owner.
Rather than resisting the wrist, it moves with it.
For us, true luxury isn't something you notice because it's heavier.
It's something you almost forget you're wearing.
Built to Age Gracefully

A leather watch strap is constantly in motion.
Every time it's fastened, every bend of the wrist, and every day of wear asks the leather to flex again and again.
Our approach has always been to create a construction that bends naturally rather than forcing unnecessary rigidity.
By maintaining a balanced profile, the leather, lining, and stitching work together more harmoniously over time, allowing the strap to age beautifully through years of everyday wear.
Longevity has never been about adding more material.
It's about allowing every material to perform as it should.
The Art of Proportion

Every watch has its own character.
Some are bold and expressive.
Others are refined and understated.
We have always been drawn to the latter.
Many of the watches that inspire our work—classic dress watches, elegant everyday pieces, and independent watchmaking—share one common quality: balance.
Their beauty isn't created through excess.
It comes from proportion.
We believe a watch strap should follow the same philosophy.
Its purpose is not to dominate the watch, but to frame it. To support it quietly. To become part of the whole rather than competing for attention.
When the proportions feel right, the entire watch feels complete.
A Construction We've Refined Over Time
Every workshop develops its own way of building a watch strap.
Some pursue visual presence.
Others prioritise versatility.
At Atelier Tamago, we've spent years refining a construction that reflects our own values.
Our standard profile begins at approximately 2.0 mm, while our signature light padding brings the finished thickness to around 3.5 mm.
This isn't a number chosen by trend or tradition.
It is the result of countless straps made by hand, worn by collectors around the world, and continuously refined through experience.
It is the profile we believe offers the most harmonious balance between everyday comfort, long-term durability, and timeless design.
Less, Done Better
Good craftsmanship is rarely about adding more.
More leather.
More padding.
More presence.
More often, it is about knowing when to stop.
Every decision we make—from selecting the leather to forming each saddle stitch—is guided by the same principle: refinement over excess.
Because a watch strap should never be remembered for its thickness.
It should be remembered for how naturally it becomes part of the watch, and part of the life of the person wearing it.
At Atelier Tamago, that's the balance we continue to pursue—one handmade strap at a time.
