A Small Detail, A Different Personality: Stitching

When choosing a leather watch strap, the material and colour usually come first. But the stitching also shapes the finished look. It can blend into the leather, frame the strap with a soft contrast, or echo a small detail on your watch.

So, how do you choose? Here are three approaches we often explore with our clients at Atelier Tamago.

Tone-on-Tone Stitching: Keep It Subtle

Tone-on-tone stitching uses thread close to the colour of the leather. It allows the grain and texture to stand out while keeping the overall pairing understated.

Black thread on black leather creates a clean finish, while matching thread on nubuck lets its soft surface take the lead.

Choose this if: you prefer a quiet pairing, or your dial already has several colours and details competing for attention.

Ecru Contrast Stitching: Define the Edges

Ecru thread adds a gentle contrast, tracing the edges of the strap and making the individual stitches more visible.

It works beautifully with brown, navy and burgundy leather. Alongside a cream dial or warm-toned markers, it can bring a pleasing sense of connection to the pairing.

Choose this if: you enjoy a classic or vintage-inspired look and would like the stitching to be part of the design.

Coloured Stitching: Pick Up a Dial Detail

Look closely at your watch. A red seconds hand, blue numerals or a yellow accent could inspire your stitching colour.

A black watch strap with red stitching can highlight a red dial detail while keeping the leather versatile. Golden-yellow thread can pick up a yellow accent without introducing a large block of colour.

You do not need an exact match. A thread colour that works comfortably alongside the dial can be equally appealing.

Choose this if: you want a more personal combination, or would like to try colour while keeping your favourite neutral leather.

What If You Are Unsure?

Start by deciding where you want the eye to go. Matching thread keeps the focus on the watch and leather; contrasting thread draws more attention to the strap’s outline and stitching.

Consider the whole pairing, too. If you have chosen a bright leather colour, subtle stitching may give you the balance you want. With a neutral strap, coloured thread offers room to experiment.

Hand Saddle Stitching at Atelier Tamago

We hand saddle stitch our watch straps, forming each stitch with two needles passing through the same hole from opposite sides. Thread colour, stitch spacing and the line of stitching all contribute to the finished character.

These are small choices we enjoy discussing with our clients. If you would like help choosing a stitching colour for your custom watch strap, send us a photo of your watch. We would be happy to suggest a few combinations.
